MLB Daily Card: Evidence, Allocation and Correlated Exposure for August 8
A 4 and 1 Night. A 5% Gain. Now the Process Starts Again.
Friday produced four wins from five MLB positions, including a win on the largest allocation of the card. The result added five percentage points to the tracked bankroll and moves August to 13 and 9 with 106% of its starting capital. That is exactly what the process is designed to measure. Not whether every position wins, but whether stronger evidence earns appropriate allocation and whether those decisions produce disciplined portfolio growth over time. Saturday begins again with three MLB positions and seven percent total published exposure.

The Largest Allocation Connected Again
August 7 Review
Friday’s MLB card finished 4 and 1. The largest published allocation also won, helping the portfolio produce a five percentage point gain overnight.
August began from a clean 100% bankroll baseline. After 22 settled positions, that tracked bankroll now stands at 106%.
This Is What the Process Is For
A winning night does not validate every indicator. A losing night does not invalidate the entire system. BrownBagBets is attempting to build something more useful than either conclusion.
Approved evidence is observed repeatedly. Indicators are combined into stacks. Confidence and uncertainty determine how much capital should participate. Every result is then retained so the quality of those decisions can be reviewed rather than remembered selectively.
The Research Card
Today’s Published Positions
Toronto Blue Jays at Philadelphia Phillies
Max Scherzer has allowed only two runs across 8.2 innings since returning from the injured list while striking out nine of 38 hitters and walking four. He has allowed one barrel with a 36% hard hit rate and has generated 48% of his contact on the ground during that stretch.
There are still reasons to question how sustainable those results are. Scherzer has produced only an 8.8% swinging strike rate, and six of those innings came against a struggling St. Louis offense. His best season long run estimator below 5.00 is a 4.63 Bot ERA alongside a 93 Pitching+.
Left handed hitters have produced a .442 weighted on-base average and .377 expected weighted on-base average against Scherzer over 30.2 innings this season. Philadelphia can attack that weakness directly. Four Phillies carry a weighted runs created plus above 100 against right handed pitching this year, and all four hit from the left side, ranging from Brandon Marsh at 118 to Bryce Harper at 166.
Aaron Nola enters with a 4.37 ERA over his last six starts, an improvement from his 5.55 season ERA. Home runs remain the primary problem, but Nola has increased his changeup usage to 24.2% during this stretch and improved his pitch modeling to a 3.44 Bot ERA and 109 Pitching+.
Toronto’s projected lineup adds another layer to the matchup. BARTOLO projects the nine hitters at an 86 weighted runs created plus on the road, 99 against right handed pitching, and 85 over the last 30 days.

- Philadelphia Left Handed Production
- Weak Scherzer Swinging Strike Rate

Minnesota Twins at Milwaukee Brewers
Taj Bradley Under 17.5 Total Pitcher Outs at -136
Cash allocation: 2%
Bradley has performed considerably worse away from Target Field this season. His road ERA rises to 4.17, his walk rate increases to 11.7%, and opponents force him to throw 4.07 pitches per plate appearance. He has remained under this outs total in eight of 13 road appearances.
Milwaukee creates an especially difficult environment for pitcher efficiency. Since June 1, the Brewers have produced a .818 OPS at home against right handed pitching with an 11.2% walk rate. They also own the lowest team chase rate, increasing the likelihood of deeper counts and additional pitches per hitter.
- Bradley Road Performance Decline
- Elevated Road Walk Rate
- High Road Pitches Per Plate Appearance
- 8 of 13 Road Starts Under
- Milwaukee Home OPS vs Right Handers
- Milwaukee Walk Rate
- Lowest Team Chase Rate
Milwaukee Brewers Moneyline at -145
Cash allocation: 2%
Milwaukee enters Game 2 after losing the series opener at home to Minnesota. The position is built partly around a situational rebound thesis, but the bullpen environment adds more tangible support.
Minnesota closer Yoendrys Gomez and several other high leverage relievers are expected to have reduced availability after working Thursday and Friday. That creates a potential late inning advantage for Milwaukee if the game remains close.
- Strong Home Team Rebound Context
- Minnesota High Leverage Bullpen Usage
- Potential Late Inning Relief Advantage
- Home Field
- Supporting Bradley Vulnerability
These are two separately tracked wagers, but they are not two fully independent theses. If Milwaukee’s patient offense forces Bradley into long counts and removes him before completing six innings, that same game state may also improve Milwaukee’s probability of winning.
BrownBagBets therefore treats this as four percent of combined Milwaukee game exposure rather than pretending the two positions represent unrelated risk.
The overlap is acknowledged before capital is deployed. Correlation is not automatically disqualifying. Unrecognized correlation is the greater portfolio problem.

What Today’s Card Demonstrates
Today contains only three positions, but the portfolio structure is more important than the count.
Philadelphia receives the largest individual allocation because its thesis contains the broadest collection of distinct matchup evidence. Milwaukee contains two separate markets, but because some of their evidence overlaps, the combined four percent exposure must be considered before either wager is viewed individually.
- 1 Identify relevant evidence.
- 2 Determine which indicators are genuinely independent.
- 3 Stack the evidence without double counting it.
- 4 Recognize correlation across markets and games.
- 5 Assign capital according to measured confidence and total exposure.
- 6 Record the outcome and use it to recalibrate the system.
