Principles exist to govern decisions before outcomes have the opportunity to influence them. This Constitution defines the responsibilities BrownBagBets accepts before research is published, before a position is resolved, and before a result can change the story.
The temptation is not merely to be wrong. Error is an unavoidable condition of decision-making under uncertainty. The deeper temptation is to change the meaning of a decision after the outcome is known.
A research constitution exists to prevent those temptations from becoming institutional habit. It establishes principles before outcomes exist, defines responsibility before conviction becomes public, and creates an accountability structure capable of surviving both winning and losing.
Everything published through BrownBagBets is intended to be measured against this Constitution—not because these principles guarantee favorable results, but because they create more disciplined, transparent, and revisable research.

The integrity of public research is revealed not only through its conclusions, but through the quality of its records, the visibility of its limitations, the honesty of its review, and its willingness to change when the evidence requires it.
The Purpose of This Document
This Constitution governs the principles behind BrownBagBets research, publication, allocation, recordkeeping, review, and revision. It is designed to make the research process more difficult to manipulate after the fact and easier for the public to examine over time.
It does not promise certainty, perfection, or immunity from error. It defines something more credible: the standard by which evidence is handled before a result and responsibility is accepted after it.

This document governs the principles behind BrownBagBets research, publication, allocation, recordkeeping, review, correction, and revision. Its authority applies wherever BrownBagBets converts market observation into public knowledge or a recorded decision.

The Governing Articles
These Articles define the beliefs BrownBagBets agrees to honor whenever research is created, challenged, priced, allocated, published, reviewed, corrected, or revised. No favorable result suspends them. No unfavorable result erases them.
Confidence must be earned through evidence, not substituted for it.
A strongly stated conclusion is not stronger research. BrownBagBets must distinguish verified fact, reasonable inference, unresolved uncertainty, and final judgment before conviction is communicated publicly.
A valid observation does not create value at every available number.
The market price determines the burden a thesis must overcome. Research that identifies a likely outcome but ignores the cost of entry remains incomplete. Selection and valuation must never be treated as the same decision.
Missing information and conflicting evidence must not be disguised by polished language.
Research should state what is known, what is inferred, what remains unavailable, and which assumptions carry the greatest risk. Uncertainty is not a defect to hide. It is a condition the decision must survive.
Evidence that weakens the thesis belongs inside the record, not outside the story.
BrownBagBets must actively search for information that could invalidate, narrow, or reprice a conclusion. Contrary evidence may reduce confidence without eliminating the thesis, but it must remain visible enough for later review.
Conviction never removes uncertainty or the responsibility to protect capital.
Position size must be governed by evidence quality, price, volatility, correlation, bankroll context, and the possibility that the thesis is wrong. Allocation is not a celebration of confidence. It is a control on its consequences.
A win does not automatically validate the process. A loss does not automatically invalidate it.
Decisions must be evaluated using the evidence, price, and information available when they were made. Outcomes provide evidence for review, but they do not receive retroactive authority over the original record.
Public conviction creates an obligation to preserve, settle, and review the decision.
Publication is not completed when a position or conclusion is released. BrownBagBets assumes responsibility for recording the decision, maintaining the result, acknowledging material limitations, and reviewing what the event later revealed.
Corrections and revisions must remain visible, dated, and attributable.
Material errors may be corrected and conclusions may evolve, but the public record must not be altered in a way that conceals the original publication. Accountability requires a visible relationship between what was first stated and what is now believed.
A system that cannot change in response to evidence is not research.
BrownBagBets must permit mechanisms to be narrowed, confidence to be reduced, classifications to change, and prior beliefs to be retired. Revision is not an admission that research failed. It is evidence that research remains alive.
Transparency is not an after-action explanation. It is a research control.
Timestamps, prices, allocations, limitations, contradictory evidence, settlement, and revision history improve the quality of the institution itself. What is made reviewable becomes more difficult to manipulate.
These Articles do not eliminate error. They limit the ways error may be hidden, rationalized, or repeated.

Readers are not required to accept a conclusion merely because BrownBagBets publishes it. They are entitled to enough information to understand the decision, examine its limitations, and distinguish the original record from what became known later.
The original position, conclusion, or research claim should remain identifiable after settlement and revision.
Timing matters. Readers should be able to distinguish pre-event research from commentary written after the result.
Where price is material, the published entry and relevant market context should be preserved separately.
A reader should be able to see how conviction translated into capital exposure rather than interpreting confidence from language alone.
Public conclusions should identify the evidence classes and mechanisms that materially supported the judgment.
Material evidence that weakened or challenged the thesis should not disappear merely because the position was published.
Missing data, unresolved assumptions, and unavailable confirmations should be stated when they meaningfully affect interpretation.
Published decisions should not vanish after losing, nor should winning decisions receive disproportionate preservation.
Readers should be able to identify whether BrownBagBets maintained, narrowed, revised, or retired a prior belief.

Reader Standard
A reader is entitled to inspect more than the conclusion.

Material decisions should retain the recorded publication time, available price, relevant market state, and later closing context whenever those facts can be reasonably documented.
BrownBagBets must not communicate uncertainty as inevitability. Language should reflect the limits of the evidence rather than the emotional strength of the opinion.
Missing confirmations, unavailable data, model constraints, dependence between sources, and meaningful assumptions should be stated when they affect the quality of the conclusion.
Position size must remain governed by the approved bankroll and exposure framework. Public excitement, recent performance, or outcome urgency may not override allocation controls.
Evidence that weakened the original thesis must remain part of the research record, even when the published position ultimately wins.
Post-event review must ask whether the original evidence, valuation, allocation, and reasoning were sound—not merely whether the result was favorable.
Material factual or analytical errors should be corrected with a visible note, date, and explanation rather than quietly removed from the public record.
Losing decisions should remain available for review under the same standards used to preserve winning decisions. Selective memory is incompatible with institutional learning.
Research may be presented clearly and persuasively, but it must not be exaggerated into certainty, stripped of limitations, or reframed as reckless betting promotion.
Institutional Accountability
BrownBagBets accepts that credible public research will sometimes document error, weak evidence, poor valuation, or incomplete reasoning. The responsibility of the institution is not to erase those moments. It is to convert them into visible learning.
The researcher may defend the original decision. The researcher may not alter the original conditions to make that defense easier.

This Constitution is intended to endure, but it is not exempt from the principle it imposes on every other BrownBagBets research asset: a system that cannot change in response to evidence is not a research system.
Governing Amendment Principle
A research constitution should become more precise as evidence accumulates, but never less accountable.
Amendments may clarify language, expand responsibilities, strengthen controls, or address conditions not anticipated in the original version. They may not be used to hide prior failures or weaken accountability after an unfavorable result.Each adopted Constitution must carry a visible version number so readers can distinguish the governing language in force at different times.
Adoption dates and amendment dates should remain publicly identifiable wherever the current governing version is presented.
Significant amendments must identify what changed, why the change was necessary, and how the revision affects future research.
Superseded versions should remain archived rather than silently deleted, allowing readers to examine institutional evolution.
The Constitution governs durable principles. The companion Research Standards may be updated more often as operating procedures improve.
An amendment may not be used to reduce the accountability owed under the version governing a previously published decision.
Constitutional changes should be deliberate, documented, and proportionate to their institutional significance.
Define the weakness, ambiguity, or new condition requiring review.
Determine whether the issue reflects one event or a durable governance problem.
State the proposed language and the responsibility it creates or clarifies.
Explain why the amendment improves accountability or research quality.
Publish the new version while preserving the prior governing record.

A constitution has no authority merely because it is written. Its authority comes from the willingness of the institution to be measured against it when that measurement is uncomfortable.
Formal Declaration
This Constitution applies to the public research identity of BrownBagBets and the Pattern Literacy knowledge system. It governs how evidence is handled, how uncertainty is communicated, how price and allocation are respected, how records are preserved, and how conclusions are reviewed after outcomes become known.
BrownBagBets does not adopt these principles as a claim of perfection. It adopts them as permission for readers, researchers, and the institution itself to identify when the work falls short.
