Editorial Standards & Methodology

This page explains how BrownBagBets researches, reviews, sizes, publishes, updates, and archives official positions.

Our editorial standard

Every published position should be understandable, reviewable, and consistent with our risk philosophy. We are more interested in documented reasoning than dramatic tone. We do not publish “locks,” guaranteed outcomes, or confidence language that implies certainty.

How a position is built

  1. Observe: Market price, movement, timing, and context are reviewed.
  2. Research: Matchup factors, injuries, schedule context, and price sensitivity are examined.
  3. Challenge: We identify what weakens the thesis and whether correlation or concentration risk is rising.
  4. Authorize: A position is published only if it earns participation under our risk framework.
  5. Allocate: Exposure is expressed as a percentage of bankroll, not as vague conviction.
  6. Document: The position enters the public record as published.

What informs stake size

Position size reflects confidence in the price, clarity of the market read, portfolio fit, and aggregate daily exposure. A larger percentage does not mean certainty. It means the read earned a larger share of controlled risk.

What we intentionally avoid

  • Guarantee language
  • Chasing behavior after losses
  • Inflated writeups designed to create urgency instead of clarity
  • Retroactive editing of results to improve the record
  • Conflicts of interest that are not disclosed clearly

Updates and timestamps

When a daily card changes, we log updates forward with a time reference rather than quietly rewriting prior information. Material corrections are also documented under our Corrections & Transparency Policy.

How monetization is separated from editorial judgment

Editorial decisions are made independently from sponsorship, partnership, or affiliate considerations. If a page contains a material commercial relationship, that relationship is disclosed in plain language.
