One Position Earned Permission. That Is the Process Working.
Saturday finished 2-1, moving the August record to 15-10. The financial result was essentially even because the largest allocation on the card lost, leaving the tracked bankroll at 106% of its August starting level. Sunday brings a different kind of test. After reviewing the available MLB board, only one position produced enough aligned evidence, acceptable uncertainty, and price support to earn public capital. That position receives 2%.
Prior Day Results
2-1 on the Board. Essentially Flat in the Portfolio.
August 8 Review
Saturday produced two wins from three published MLB positions. The raw result was positive, but the largest allocation was the losing position, leaving the bankroll approximately unchanged at 106%.
That distinction is precisely why BrownBagBets tracks price and cash allocation alongside win-loss record. A 2-1 day is not automatically more profitable than a 1-2 day. The portfolio result depends on where capital was actually placed.
Selectivity Is an Output
Today the research process produced one position. That does not mean only one game was studied. It means only one position earned permission to involve capital.
BrownBagBets is designed to distinguish research activity from portfolio activity. Markets can be studied, indicators can be tested, and hypotheses can be recorded without automatically becoming wagers.
Research In Progress
NFL Preseason Is Being Studied. It Has Not Earned Capital Yet.
NFL preseason is now fully underway, and BrownBagBets is actively testing potential football indicators behind the scenes. Those observations are being researched, challenged, and recorded before they are permitted to influence the public portfolio.
No NFL preseason position has cleared that threshold today. That can change as evidence develops, but a market being active does not create an obligation to participate.
The Research Card
Today's Published Position
New York Mets at Pittsburgh Pirates
New York was held scoreless Saturday, but the broader offensive profile remains considerably stronger than one game suggests. Before the shutout, the Mets had scored at least six runs in four consecutive games and had been producing consistently across the lineup.
Pittsburgh enters 3-9 across its last 12 games and has reached five runs only once in its last 11. That prolonged offensive limitation becomes particularly important against a New York pitching structure capable of controlling both the early and later innings.
Sean Manaea has completed six innings in three consecutive starts, with all three qualifying as quality starts. Behind him, the Mets bullpen has recorded a 1.82 ERA over the last two weeks.
Jared Jones has not been working deeply into games for Pittsburgh, increasing the likelihood that the Pirates must ask more of their bullpen. At a plus money price, the combination of starting pitcher length, bullpen form, recent offensive disparity, and price gives New York the only position on today's board that cleared the published threshold.
- Mets Recent Offensive Production
- Pittsburgh Extended Offensive Weakness
- Pittsburgh 3-9 Recent Form
- Manaea Starting Pitcher Length
- Three Consecutive Quality Starts
- Mets Bullpen 1.82 Recent ERA
- Jones Limited Starting Length
- Plus Money Price
Position count is not a target. The portfolio does not need a minimum number of wagers to be complete. Today's broader MLB board did not produce enough additional qualifying evidence to justify more capital. The Mets position did.

What the 98% Not Wagered Represents
Today's most important portfolio number may not be the 2% being wagered. It may be the 98% that is not.
Cash that does not have sufficient evidence behind it remains cash. The objective is not maximum daily deployment. The objective is disciplined participation when evidence, price, confidence, and uncertainty collectively justify risk.
- 1 Research the available market.
- 2 Identify qualifying indicators.
- 3 Challenge the evidence and opposing case.
- 4 Require an acceptable price.
- 5 Allocate only the capital justified by the decision.
- 6 Leave everything else undeployed.
