Five MLB Positions and a 101% August Bankroll
The Record Took a Hit. The Process Did Not Change.
Thursday finished 1 and 3. That is part of the record and it belongs here. The largest position on the card did connect, which helped preserve capital, but the tracked August bankroll moved from 104% to 101%. The month now stands at 9 and 8. A large baseball weekend begins with five new MLB positions, ten percent of the current bankroll allocated, and exactly the same research process that produced the decisions before them.

A Losing Record With Capital Still Protected
August 6 Review
Thursday was not a strong card. One of four published positions won. The difference between the raw record and the financial outcome was allocation.
The largest position on the card carried a 3% allocation and won. That result did not turn the night profitable, but it materially reduced the bankroll damage. The tracked August bankroll declined three percentage points and remains above its starting level at 101%.
The System Is Bigger Than Tonight’s Picks
BrownBagBets is being built around a simple idea: individual bets are decisions inside a larger research and capital management system.
Evidence is identified through approved indicators. Relevant indicators are stacked. Confidence and uncertainty are measured. Price determines whether participation is justified. Capital is assigned. The result is recorded and used to recalibrate the system.
The Research Card
Today’s Published Positions
New York Mets at Pittsburgh Pirates
Mets rookie left hander Zac Thornton has allowed seven earned runs across his last five starts and is supported by a bullpen carrying a 1.65 ERA over the last two weeks.
Pittsburgh has scored exactly two runs in four of its last five games and owns the worst OPS against left handed pitching over the last 15 days. New York enters with considerably stronger offensive momentum, scoring 13 runs Thursday to complete a sweep in Cleveland after scoring six runs in each game of that series.
Carmen Mlodzinski will open for Pittsburgh and has handled that role effectively, but the broader offensive and bullpen evidence favors the road side at a plus money price.
- Opponent Weakness vs Left Handers
- Recent Offensive Suppression
- Strong Mets Bullpen Form
- Road Team Offensive Momentum
- Plus Money Price
Atlanta Braves at New York Yankees
New York has struggled to generate runs recently, but the starting pitching matchup provides a reason to look beyond the immediate offensive results.
Tyler Mahle is 0 and 6 with an 8.04 ERA across nine road appearances. He has also performed considerably worse under the lights, posting a 5.95 ERA in 11 night games.
Atlanta has played well overall, but has won only four of its last nine road games. Max Fried provides New York with the stronger side of the pitching matchup. In three starts since returning from the injured list, Fried has allowed four runs on eight hits while striking out 18.
- Extreme Opposing Road Pitcher Split
- Weak Opposing Night Split
- Starting Pitcher Advantage
- Fried Post Injury Form
- Atlanta Road Performance Context
- Home Field
Athletics at Boston Red Sox
The Athletics have lost 11 of their last 12 games and enter after being swept by Cincinnati. Their three losses in that series came by one run, but today’s matchup creates a materially different offensive environment.
Boston has been one of baseball’s strongest teams over the last month. During the last two weeks, the Red Sox have produced a .845 OPS at home and a .811 OPS against right handed pitching. Those offensive splits are roughly 300 points higher than the corresponding Athletics results.
Payton Tolle enters at 6 and 6 with a 3.30 ERA and should receive meaningful run support against Jack Perkins, who is 0 and 4 with a 7.44 ERA over his last seven games. The Athletics bullpen has also recorded a 6.26 ERA since the middle of July.
- Opponent Extended Losing Form
- Elite Boston Home Offense
- Elite Boston Split vs Right Handers
- Starting Pitcher Edge
- Weak Opposing Starter Form
- Weak Opposing Bullpen Form
- Run Support Environment
- Home Field
Minnesota Twins at Milwaukee Brewers
Minnesota starts Zebby Matthews, who is 2 and 4 with a 7.33 ERA on the road. That road performance creates one of the clearer venue based pitching disadvantages on today’s card.
Milwaukee has won three consecutive games and enters 18 games above .500 at home. The Brewers also expect Jake Bauers, who has produced 20 home runs and 64 runs batted in, to return after missing several games with an injury.
- Weak Opposing Road Pitcher Split
- Strong Home Team Record
- Current Winning Form
- Lineup Reinforcement
- Home Field
Colorado Rockies at St. Louis Cardinals
Colorado enters with an 18 and 38 road record. Ryan Feltner is 0 and 3 away from Denver with a 6.00 ERA, creating another significant road performance concern.
St. Louis expects Jordan Walker back in the lineup after he missed two games with a minor injury before Thursday’s scheduled day off. Cardinals starter Kyle Leahy owns a 2.95 ERA at home and delivered seven strong innings against Colorado last season.
- Weak Opponent Road Record
- Weak Opposing Road Pitcher Split
- Strong Home Pitcher Split
- Lineup Reinforcement
- Previous Matchup Success
- Home Field

Why Allocation Matters
Yesterday provided a useful example of why BrownBagBets does not treat every position as interchangeable.
A 3% position represents a different level of measured conviction than a 1% position. That does not mean the larger wager is guaranteed to win. It means the available evidence, price, uncertainty, and market expression supported a larger share of the bankroll.
- 1 Identify the evidence before choosing the market.
- 2 Determine whether the indicators are relevant and genuinely distinct.
- 3 Evaluate uncertainty and whether the available price justifies participation.
- 4 Assign capital according to measured confidence rather than excitement.
- 5 Record the result and use it to improve future calibration.
