25-16 in August. 113% Bankroll. Six MLB Positions Today
The Price Does Not Determine the Confidence. The Evidence Does.
Thursday finished 2-2 and gave back a small portion of the August gain, moving the standardized bankroll from 115% to 113%. August now stands at 25-16 as we enter an important mid-month weekend. Friday produces six MLB positions and 14% total allocation. The card ranges from a 1% favorite at -174 to a 4% position nearly at even money, which is a useful reminder that confidence comes from the complete evidence stack, not simply the price.
Prior Day Results
2-2. A Small Drawdown. Same Process Friday.
August 13 Review
Thursday finished evenly at 2-2, but the financial result was modestly negative based on the prices and allocations attached to those positions. The standardized August bankroll moves from 115% to approximately 113%.
The important point heading into Friday is that a small drawdown does not create urgency. The bankroll remains 13 percentage points above the August opening baseline, and every position today still starts with a fresh evaluation.
Expensive Does Not Mean Stronger
The Cubs are the shortest price on today's card at -174, yet receive only 1% of bankroll.
Kansas City is available near even money at -104 and receives 4%. That is not a contradiction. Price and confidence answer different questions.
The Research Card
Today's Published Positions
St. Louis Cardinals at Chicago Cubs
Chicago used the weaker portion of its bullpen Thursday, which should leave the preferred relief options in a better position for Friday's matinee. That bullpen availability supports the Cubs side beyond the starting pitching matchup.
We also prefer Clay Holmes to Matthew Liberatore in today's starting matchup. Holmes gives Chicago the starting foundation we want, while the Cardinals counter with a pitcher we are more comfortable opposing.
There is legitimate counterevidence. St. Louis had Thursday off and enters with a rested bullpen, while Chicago is asking its staff to return quickly for a day game. The price is also expensive enough that there is little reason to stretch the allocation.

Boston Red Sox at Pittsburgh Pirates
Boston has dropped five of its last six games, so this is not a momentum position. The attraction is the matchup underneath the recent results.
Boston's offense still owns an .886 OPS against right-handed pitching in August. Pittsburgh starts Bubba Chandler, who has allowed only two earned runs in 11.2 August innings, giving us real counterevidence rather than a straightforward pitcher fade.
The other side of the pitching matchup is more favorable. Boston left-hander Jake Bennett enters with a 3.17 ERA across 13 starts, while Pittsburgh has produced only a .522 OPS against left-handed pitching this month.
The Pirates are also 10-26 when facing left-handed starters, providing a broader result pattern consistent with the current matchup.
- Boston .886 August OPS vs RHP
- Jake Bennett 3.17 ERA
- Pittsburgh .522 August OPS vs LHP
- Pirates 10-26 vs Left-Handed Starters
- Near Even Money Price
San Diego Padres at Cleveland Guardians
This position is built around the starting pitching environment and deliberately stops after five innings.
Gavin Williams has produced solid surface results, but his hard-hit rate and barrel percentage sit near the bottom of the league. That creates some vulnerability beneath the traditional stat line.
On the other side, Cleveland's projected lineup has struggled historically against Michael King, producing a .175 batting average and .453 OPS across 40 career at-bats.
The half run is the key to the market expression. San Diego does not need to lead after five innings. A tie also wins the position. In a matchup where both starters offer plausible paths to run prevention, getting +0.5 across only the first 15 defensive outs creates the version of the thesis we prefer.

- First Five Isolation
- Half Run Protection
- Near Even Price
Seattle Mariners at Houston Astros
Seattle's offensive decline remains the starting point. The Mariners have scored two runs or fewer in six of their last seven games, creating a favorable environment for Houston starter Peter Lambert.
Lambert has produced a 2.29 ERA across his last seven starts according to the research captured for today's card, while Houston's bullpen carries a 1.49 ERA over the last two weeks.
George Kirby remains a credible opposing starter and prevents this from becoming a larger allocation automatically. But his road ERA stands at 4.10 across nine road games and he has completed more than six innings only twice in his last 12 starts.
That workload component matters because Seattle's bullpen has carried an 8.79 ERA over the last two weeks. If Houston can force Kirby out before the late innings, the matchup becomes substantially more attractive.

- Lambert Recent Form
- Houston Bullpen Recent Form
- Kirby Road Split

Kansas City Royals at Los Angeles Angels
Grayson Rodriguez is again the central fade point. He has struggled badly this season and has been particularly vulnerable at Angel Stadium, where the captured research shows a 1-3 record with a 9.10 ERA across seven starts.
Kansas City has lost six of its last seven games, which is meaningful counterevidence, but the Royals are 3-0 against the Angels this season.
Los Angeles has also struggled badly against right-handed pitching in August, carrying a .530 OPS against that side, the lowest mark in MLB according to today's research. That creates a path for Seth Lugo despite his own road concerns.
The market snapshot adds another observation we are now formally watching. Approximately 52% of tickets are on Kansas City while 74% of the money is on the Royals, creating a 22 percentage point delta.
This is the second consecutive Daily Card featuring a captured market split above the candidate 20 point threshold we are beginning to track. That makes it useful research evidence, but it remains a candidate indicator rather than a proven betting rule.

- Angels Weak August OPS vs RHP
- Royals 3-0 vs Angels
- 22 Point Ticket-to-Cash Delta
- Near Even Money Price
- Seth Lugo Night Split
Colorado Rockies at San Francisco Giants
This is intentionally uncomfortable. Colorado is one of baseball's weakest road teams and Kyle Freeland enters with a 6.63 ERA. We are not attempting to hide either fact.
The case begins with the opposing starter. San Francisco has lost 15 of Landen Roupp's last 17 starts dating back to May, while his nighttime ERA has been materially worse than his daytime performance.
Freeland provides at least some opposing context. Colorado is 5-4 across his last nine starts, and the current Giants roster has produced only nine hits in 58 career at-bats against him, a .155 batting average.
Colorado also enters after taking the final two games of its Arizona series. At +119, we are being compensated for accepting the obvious weaknesses attached to the road side.

- Giants 2-15 in Recent Roupp Starts
- Giants Poor Career Results vs Freeland
- Colorado Two Game Winning Streak

The Market Price Is Not the Confidence Score
Chicago costs -174 and receives 1%.
Kansas City costs -104 and receives 4%.
The difference comes from the evidence surrounding those prices. Chicago has advantages, but the market already charges heavily for them and St. Louis enters rested.
Kansas City gives us a vulnerable opposing starter, extreme opponent platoon weakness, a favorable season matchup, a near-even price and another candidate 20 point plus ticket-to-cash discrepancy.
Price discipline asks whether the market is worth entering. Measured confidence determines how much capital should follow.

Two Observations Are Not Validation
Repetition makes the question more interesting. It does not make the answer automatic.
BrownBagBets should continue logging the source, snapshot time, price, ticket share, cash share, closing line, accompanying indicators and eventual outcome.
Over time, we can evaluate whether 20 point plus discrepancies actually provide independent information or whether they merely appear alongside stronger factors already captured elsewhere in the research stack.
