MLB Daily Card: What 14 Days of August Have Taught Us
5-1 Last Night. 123% Bankroll. Today Only Two Positions Qualify.
Friday was the kind of night the first thirteen betting days of August had been building toward. BrownBagBets finished 5-1, moving the August record to 30-17 and the standardized bankroll from 113% to 123%. For a new reader, the important part is not simply the winning night. It is what happens next. Saturday begins from zero. After reviewing the MLB board, only two positions have earned participation, representing just 4% of the current bankroll.

Day 14 Delivered. The Lesson Is Bigger Than 5-1.
August 14 Review
Friday produced five wins across six published MLB positions. The result added approximately ten percentage points to the standardized bankroll and moved August to its strongest level of the month at 123%.
A single winning night should never be mistaken for proof that every underlying idea is correct. But after two weeks of logging decisions, outcomes, prices, wager sizes and emerging indicators, the 5-1 result becomes another meaningful observation inside a much larger sample.

A Daily Card is not a list of every game we have an opinion on. It is the final output of a decision process.
The Research Card
Today's Published Positions
Boston Red Sox at Pittsburgh Pirates
Boston enters in poor recent form, having lost six of its last seven. That would normally create hesitation. The starting pitching context gives us a reason to look beyond the recent team record.
Sonny Gray enters Saturday at 14-3. One unusual pattern from this season is that Boston has gone 10-0 in Gray's starts against teams other than Toronto since May 30, while losing all three of his starts against the Blue Jays during that span. We do not treat that split as predictive by itself, but it adds context to a broader strong season for Gray.
Gray has also gone 5-0 against National League opponents this season. Pittsburgh counters with Jared Jones, while Boston enters needing to stabilize after its recent slide.
- Sonny Gray 14-3 Season Record
- Gray 5-0 vs National League
- 10-0 Boston Pattern Outside Toronto
- Starting Pitcher Edge
- Manageable -125 Price
Milwaukee Brewers at Los Angeles Dodgers
Milwaukee sends Jacob Misiorowski into one of baseball's most difficult offensive environments. Misiorowski has been elite this season and deserves to be treated as a major source of uncertainty, not casually faded.
That is precisely why we prefer Los Angeles +1.5 rather than asking the Dodgers to win outright. The wager gives one of baseball's deepest lineups a one-run cushion while preserving a path to success even if Misiorowski performs at a high level.
Los Angeles counters with Justin Wrobleski. His season line has been considerably better than his recent stretch, and the matchup is not built around claiming a clear starting-pitcher advantage for the Dodgers.
The internal BARTOLO projection supplied for today's research grades the matchup approximately even. If our internal projection sees a near coin-flip game while the market allows us to hold Los Angeles +1.5 runs, the additional run protection becomes the primary source of value.
- Elite Dodgers Lineup
- Home Field
- Internal Projection Near Even
- 1.5 Run Protection
- Multiple Paths to Settlement

Why 96% of the Bankroll Is Doing Nothing Today
Because cash does not have to be in action to be productive.
Capital that does not have a sufficiently strong opportunity should remain available for tomorrow, next week or the next card that earns greater confidence.
Yesterday six positions qualified. Today two qualify. Neither card is inherently better because of its size.
BrownBagBets treats pass as a valid portfolio decision. The goal is not maximum activity. The goal is disciplined participation.
What August Is Teaching Us
The Bankroll Is the Scoreboard. The Process Is the Product.
123% Does Not Mean Every Decision Was Right
August has included losing cards, flat cards, larger wagers that lost, smaller wagers that won, no-action days and now a 5-1 night.
The bankroll is above baseline because the combined financial effect of those decisions has been positive. That is different from pretending the process eliminates losses.
A sustainable framework has to survive the losing positions too.
